Star Battle
Logic & Math
The rules
- Every row and every column must contain exactly one star. Once a row has its star, every other cell in that row is empty.
- The grid is split into coloured regions. Each region also needs exactly one star, however big or small it is.
- No two stars may share an edge or a corner. A star blocks all eight cells around it, so cross them out as soon as you place it.
- Every puzzle has exactly one answer, and you can reach it by logic alone. When all stars are placed correctly the board lights up.
How to play Star Battle
Star Battle is a placement puzzle. Put stars on the grid so that every row, every column and every outlined region holds exactly one, and no two stars ever touch.

- A region of two or three cells has very few options. Its star is often forced from the start.
- Marking cells that cannot hold a star is most of the work. The stars appear on their own.
- After every star, cross out all eight cells around it. New forced moves usually follow.
- If a region sits entirely inside one row, that row's star is in the region. Cross out the rest of the row.
- When a row, column or region has its star, everything else in it is empty.
- Two regions squeezed into two columns must use both columns. Nothing else in those columns can hold a star.
